DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) is a worldwide-recognized standard for the exchange of medical data such as medical reports, images or videos. DICOM standardize both the storage format of data and the communication protocol used for the exchange.
The communication protocol is an application protocol, which uses TCP/IP to communicate among the systems. DICOM data can be exchanged between two different units through DICOM send. Almost all manufactures of systems to produce or edit medical images such as digital x-ray, MRT, CT or sonography currently use the DICOM standard in their products. This enables the interoperation between systems of different manufactures in the medical sphere.
DICOM is the basis for digital image storage in both doctor offices and hospitals (Picture Archiving and Communication System, PACS).
